A Good Time at Fitz’s Root Beer in St. Louis, Missouri

When my friend and I decided to go to St. Louis, Missouri, I immediately reached out to my long time friend who currently lives there. One of the first things I asked him was where were some good places to eat. The first place out his mouth was Fitz’s Root Beer. We then decided that this was the place we were going to go. We were definitely not disappointed!

The building that Fitz’s is housed in has its own unique history. In the 1920s it was a bank that changed hands. In the 1980s it became a Chinese restaurant. Fitz’s Root Beer made its debut at a drive in movie theater in St. Louis in 1947. In the 90s it became a bottling company and a soda microbrewery. Today you can still watch them bottling sodas from the restaurant.

When we first walked in we were greeted and quickly seated on the 2nd floor. I loved being able to look down on the main area of the restaurant. Looking through the menu my attraction was immediately drawn to the desserts, their infamous floats, and the many different sodas to choose from. There is an option to order the Bottomless Mug and try several different sodas. My friend and I both opted to get one soda, I ordered Cream Soda, which came in a bottle and a mug.

After browsing the menu a bit we decided to get the BBQ Sampler Platter. The waitress informed us it was more than enough for the two of us since I was originally going to order it myself. The Sampler Platter had Applewood smoked meat (pulled pork, beef brisket, and slicked turkey breasts) with their own rub. A big piece of Texas Toast was underneath it all. There was also Fitz’s Root Beer BBQ sauce with seasoned fries and their original baked beans. She was right, it was enough for both of us!

We were immediately tasted it was smoked. The Root Beer BBQ sauce was really good and I am not even a fan of root beer. The beans were really delicious. It was also more than enough food. Neither of us finished it. We wanted to make sure there was room for one of the epic floats they are known for!

From my seat I could see the soda on tap which I thought was pretty cool. I also saw the guy making root beer floats. He was wearing gloves and picked up a huge amount of ice cream with his hand, molded it a bit and stuck it on top of the mug. The float looked like a meal in itself.

I wasn’t sure what to order because the choices sounded amazing. The waitress helped me decide on the S’mores float. It had draft cream soda, chocolate ice cream, Hershey’s chocolate syrup, Marshmallow Flu, graham crackers, and some whipped cream. That thing was massive and tasted really good.

My friend ordered a Strawberry Fields that comes with their own strawberry soda, with strawberry ice cream, whipped cream, and a vanilla wafer. It was also her first time ever having a float or ice cream soda as it is also called. She really liked it. Neither one of us finished it completely either. Way too much and we were both pretty full. If soda isn’t your thing, they of course have other things to drink as well as beers.

I also noticed they had a bunch of old school video games, pool tables, and a jukebox. Fitz’s is really fun place with good service. We enjoyed our time there and would happily go back to try other meals and of course other floats. Of course on our way out the place was packed! We got in there at the right time. If you are ever in St. Louis, Fitz’s is a must stop.
