10 New York City Tips from New Yorkers
There are so many things to see, do, and know about New York City. As a person born and raised in New York City, it is important to help those who want to come visit this concrete jungle. With the help of my fellow blogger friend Adanna from Rattles & Heels we have 10 tips that we hope help while you are visiting NYC. Honestly there is so much to know about New York City there will most likely be more posts I write about this.
Adanna’s Tips
“I’ve lived in New York City for the last 16 years, and this city is so mysterious, exciting and fun that I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Here are a few things you should know before visiting NYC!”
- You can visit museums free or at reduced cost depending on the day and time! Yes, museums in New York City like the world renown MoMA offer free admission hours. Checking the museums, you plan to visit websites before your trip can save you money.
- Always make reservations! Even for dining during the middle of the week, you might need reservations, or you would find yourself waiting for good restaurants.
- Get out of Manhattan! Yes, Manhattan is the nucleus of New York City, but you can get more authentic food, fewer tourists and experiences in the boroughs.
- Finally, as a mom of three, I have to stress that you shouldn’t shy away from traveling to New York City with kids. The Seaglass Carousel in Battery Park, Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Museum of Natural History are just a few of the must-stops with kids in the Big Apple.
Holly’s Tips
- If you are looking for affordable hotels or ones with a little more space look outside of Manhattan. Brooklyn and especially Queens have a lot of hotels all over. If you fly into NYC, you are already flying into Queens, so consider it!
- “The City” as us New Yorkers refer to Manhattan offers many free WiFi at the LinkNYC kiosks. You are also able to charge up your devices there.
- If you want another way to get around, you can always hop on a Citi Bike and sight see. There are so many places to drop the bike off and do your thing. Just please do your best to stay in the bike lanes and abide by the lights and rules of the road. Us New Yorkers can’t stand when a biker is in the middle of the street like a car.
- While taking the subway, don’t get overwhelmed with which train goes where. It is not as terrible as you may think. Just in case though feel free to download CityMapper. Not only can you use it NYC, but also in other cities around the world. Also learn more about how to navigate the subway here.
- Don’t be afraid of eating in small or eateries that you may not have heard of. There are a lot of hidden gems all over the boroughs. Just make sure they have an A letter grade! Try a bacon, egg, and cheese from a bodega (corner store.) Don’t worry if you see a cat, it’s normal.

Fun and solid tips. Site-seeing in NYC can be intimidating and I feel this read can relieve some tension for new comers and tourist. I like where you suggest to get out of Manhattan (the city) because so many people believe there is nothing outside of the island. Last thing is you can’t leave NY without trying a slice of pizza. Best in the US!

It can be. People get lost easily and not sure how to go about navigating. People should always get out of the city. Love our pizza for sure.

See now this makes sense to get tips about the city from folks who actually live there. I’ll have to keep this in mind if I ever go there.

Really great tips! As a fellow born and raised New Yorker, you still shared a few I didn’t even know….I honestly didn’t spend a lot of time in the city but more so in the suburbs of white plains and Westchester County. So making a reservation during the week is something I probably wouldn’t think of.

Thank you. Ahh yes, that is outside of NYC which I have spent time in because I went to school up there for a little while.

I never considered exploring Queens or Brooklyn but i’s a good tip. I am sure it’s a lot less congested and just as great to explore. Thanks for the tips
