The majority of my life my most frequently asked questions have always been what are you, where are you from, where are your parents from, and so many other variations of these questions. I have always tried to give the shortest answer possible. Constantly repeating it becomes annoying sometimes. Then there are those moments where I have told certain people what it is I am and they attempt to argue with me. I have been told I couldn’t possible be what I said I was because my look doesn’t match.
People have literally come to me with an argument in tow trying to discredit who I say I am simply based off a pre determined look they have made up in their mind. Then there are those who will sit there and guess every ethnicity in the book. I have heard so many different potential ethnicities I could be here all day listing them.

Despite all of that I have always had an idea of what ethnicities I am, but I always figured there had to be more or something I wasn’t aware of. So I thought it would be pretty cool to take the test. It took about 6 or 7 weeks to get the results back after spitting into a tube, shaking it up with some blue liquid, and sending it in. It is great that they have something like this and it says as technology increases the percentages of the results could change.

As a person who loves to travel, getting the results will give me more ideas of places I need to visit and learn more about those places. So I was very excited when the results came back in. Some of what came back I was aware of and the rest I was surprised. I was more so surprised on the percentages. To see my results, check out the video below.

Have you ever used Ancestry DNA?

July 16, 2017 at 3:03 AMThat is one cool way to find out where all our ancestors have traveled. š
I am keen to find my data too.

July 16, 2017 at 3:41 AMI’ve always wanted to do this! I was just having a conversation about it today actually, lol. I’ve been doing a lot of research about my family history lately so this would be fun to add to the mix! That’s exciting that you got your results–so fun to learn more about family history!

July 18, 2017 at 11:42 AMYea they have a bunch of different tests, but I chose to go with the Ancestry DNA one. I already had an idea, but it is cool to see the full breakdown.

July 16, 2017 at 9:17 AMThat’s crazy that all it takes is a little bit of spit to determine such a major part of who you are and where you came from. Love the idea of then visiting all those places and looking for similarities between yourself and the people in that region.
Holly Dayz
July 18, 2017 at 11:47 AMThat is crazy right? And it isn’t even a ton of spit. Yea, I can’t wait to visit these places.

July 16, 2017 at 10:11 AMBased on your features, you look like an African mix to me. I am, too. When I heard your results, it all made sense to me.

July 18, 2017 at 11:48 AMAwesome! Yea I had an overall idea I just wasn’t aware of the full breakdown.

July 16, 2017 at 4:18 PMThis is so cool! I wouldn’t have said that you’re not of African descendant, but who cares what people think anyway? I’d love to do this test as well and see if there are any unexpected matches š
Holly Dayz
July 18, 2017 at 11:51 AMI wouldn’t have either, but the things I have heard over the years are very interesting to say the least. I hope you get the chance to do it.

July 21, 2017 at 10:51 AMYea, I had an idea of the overall. Just not the percentages or the full breakdown.

July 18, 2017 at 12:28 AMI have not done this yet, but I want to! My dream is to find Italian ancestors who will welcome me with open arms and a big plate of pasta!

July 21, 2017 at 10:52 AMSounds like you would constantly be in for a great treat and eating well.

July 18, 2017 at 2:06 AM“What are you” seems like a pretty offensive question for people to ask lol – I would love to take this test, I see the ads on TV all the time, and I think it’s really interesting, because in todays day and age there’s been so much diversification of cultures and mixed breeding between nationalities / immigration, that I think people would be surprised by how diverse their ancestry is. Nice combo of African ancestry!
Holly Dayz
July 21, 2017 at 10:57 AMI have heard many offensive things in regards to “what are you.” I hope you do get to the take the test. It was pretty cool and interesting when I got the results back. A lot of people would definitely be surprised, some people don’t realize what all they may be.
Chrysoula Manika
July 18, 2017 at 5:14 PMI don’t believe people can be so rude sometimes. Does it matter where you are from? Anyway, I would love to do the test too and see where I am from. You seem to have roots from so many places!
Holly Dayz
July 21, 2017 at 10:58 AMI get asked this question every day sometimes more than once. I hope you get the chance to. I apparently have many more places to visit.

July 19, 2017 at 2:06 AMI’ve always been curious to do one of these! Believe it or not, when I was living in Tennessee I used to get the “what are you” question all the time! So rude! Everyone would then argue that I was Hispanic/Latina too (I’m not). That kinda stopped happening when I moved to Florida where we have actual Spanish people around lol.
Holly Dayz
July 21, 2017 at 10:59 AMYou should definitely do one and see what the results are. It is pretty exciting when you get them back. People always think they know what people are based off their own opinions.

August 1, 2017 at 4:16 PMOk, I absolutely love this! I got my mother-in-law one of these kits for mother’s day and wanted it. Now that I’m seeing this video, i want to get it even more. You are just too cute with your “booyah” proving people wrong.
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:31 PMThey are currently having a sale. You should get one and do it. Ha thank you!
Shanieism
August 1, 2017 at 7:04 PMOh wow! I didn’t realize that actually sold kits to trace your DNA. I never paid any attention. I want to do one for my daughter to trace her ancestry on her Father’s side.
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:32 PMYea, there are a few different companies that do. You should do it for her.

August 1, 2017 at 9:42 PMInteresting results. I would like to give this a try. Im super interested in knowing all that I am made up of.

August 6, 2017 at 6:33 PMGive it a whirl. Finding out the results are a great experience.

August 1, 2017 at 11:14 PMI always wonder if I am going to go through with an ancestry kit. I’m adopted so sometimes I am in the mood to find answers and other times I just don’t want to be bothered. I’m sure I’m not alone with the flip flopping. Congratulations on obtaining your results!
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:38 PMI think you should go for it! It would be really cool to find out don’t you think?

August 1, 2017 at 11:23 PMSince I moved to Atlanta I’ve had several Nigerians claim me. I guess the dark chocolate skin and high cheekbones make me look like fam. Maybe we’re related.
I can imagine living in NY, by appearance only, people would assume you’re Latina.
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:40 PMThey tell you who you could be related to when you take the test. You never know. Yea it happens all the time.

August 2, 2017 at 7:59 AMI think they is really cool, I need to share my results. I got a kit for Christmas and sent it off. I was shocked, I had no idea other than black. lol
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:46 PMYou should, I had gotten mine for Christmas too. Took me awhile before I actually sent it in though.

August 2, 2017 at 9:03 AMGreat post and interesting results. I feel your pain too in terms of everyone asking what you are. I am clearly black but have been told I have an “exotic” look (not) so everyone thinks I am some kind of latina too. In their faces š
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:41 PMI am always being asked. Pretty much every single day.

August 2, 2017 at 9:18 AMJust finished watching the results.Im so happy for you. Must be so nuts to get all that from just spitting in a tube.
Im too concerned with my DNA being out in the world with God knows who, but I find it so fascinating at the same time!
Holly Dayz
August 6, 2017 at 6:42 PMIt is pretty cool that, that is all you really have to do. I thought about that too, but what the hey lol.

August 2, 2017 at 9:24 AMYou’ve got quite an awesome mix! Europe, Africa and Asia all considerably covered. I did my test last year as well and it really is refreshing to be able to pinpoint an exact location.

August 6, 2017 at 6:43 PMOh awesome that you did it too. Now there are lots more places on my radar to check out and experience.
