Pole dancing has had some negative connotations behind it. Many associate it with strip clubs and the naughtier erotic side of people, as if it should only belong in strip clubs. There are even pole dancing competitions around the world. Using a pole to exercise started hundreds of years ago in India and has greatly transformed. This form of fitness is not just for women, there are many classes in many parts of the world solely for men. Pole dancing is not only a great way to get in shape, but is said to be a great boost in confidence. So when I got the opportunity to go, I tried it out.
A lot of people talk the talk, but very few do what they say. So when I decided I wanted to try pole dancing, I asked around to many of my female friends. Of course many friends claimed to be interested. I looked up classes and different schedules, but couldn’t find anyone to go with me. I guess talking about it sounds better than actually doing it.

Finally a long time friend of mine, with slight hesitation agreed to go. These classes are extremely popular and many were booked, but I managed to find a class. Upon paying for the class we were immediately nervous. I already know I am no betty spaghetti in no shape or form and I lack upper body strength as far as I’m concerned, but I was excited to try this.
Prior to the class we found out the attire was short shorts and a tank top and a notice not to wear lotion. Let’s just say lack of lotion wasn’t exactly an option in its entirety. Who feels sexy with dry or ashy skin? It is important not to wear any or much at all because you will slide off the pole. Yoga mats were waiting for us when we entered the room and we sat down.

Class started and we did a warm up. The warm up was a work out in itself. Push ups, crunches, fan kicks, and much more. Finally it was time to put the mats up and start on the pole. We all were instructed to get a partner because we were sharing a pole. I was really glad my friend was with me. The instructor taught us how to walk around the pole, (in a sexy fashion of course), body rolls, basic floor work, fan kicks, a fireman spin, back hook spin, and dismounts to the floor.

After learning all these different techniques we put it together to make a routine. Finally we warmed down and class was over. I survived and I was very proud of myself. We had a lot of fun. The instructor even came over to talk to my friend and I to let us know we did very well and she can tell we had a lot of fun.
Although I was extremely sore and bruised from class I enjoyed it so much I signed up for more classes. It really is a great way to workout, especially since I am the type of person who finds gyms boring. This workout is for all shapes and sizes, those who may not be as flexible, or lack strength. It is actually addicting and I see why people really get into it. It’s hard, but it’s worth it.
Have you ever taken a pole dancing class? What was your experience like?

March 31, 2015 at 12:23 PMFascinating. I always wondered about a pole dancing class, though my interest piqued because of a female friend that does dance and told me about the benefits of being a male dancer. I chose not to try male dancing, however pole dancing classes sound fun.

April 1, 2015 at 10:19 PMA good friend of mines had a pole dancing party for her birthday. I felt very awkward because I have no rhythm and it was not easy for me to do. I admire women that can really work the pole with ease because it’s hard work. I’m all about new experiences so I will try again in the near future.

April 2, 2015 at 6:38 PMIt is not an easy thing to do. I took a few classes before I actually felt like I was half way decent. My first class I was laughing at myself. I think you should try again for sure.

April 2, 2015 at 1:45 AMFunny! Glad you liked it. I did it once for a friend’s bachelorette’s party and could not believe how much harder it was than it looks!

April 28, 2015 at 12:13 PMAs a man I wouldn’t try it, lol but I’m all for it as far as the ladies go. There’s nothing wrong with dancing on a pole. Especially if it’s building your confidence as well as helping you stay fit in a fun way. Probably a good place to meet new friends who are trying to better their health also =)
