Disney Lookout Cay Cabana Review: Worth It?

There are many things to know about taking a Disney Cruise. One of the biggest things people talk about when planning a Disney Cruises’s private island and destination is the cabanas. They’re expensive, hard to get, and people seem very divided on whether they’re actually worth it.

After getting one ourselves, I can honestly see both sides. We stayed in Mabrika Cove Family Cabana #9, and while it was definitely relaxing and had a lot of nice perks, there were also a few things that surprised me that I think are worth knowing ahead of time.

Getting a Cabana Isn’t Impossible

I know people online make it seem like getting a cabana is impossible unless you’re concierge or a very high Castaway Club level. While those guests do get earlier access, it’s still possible to get one without being at the top tier.

We were Silver Castaway Club members and were able to get cabanas on both our second and third sailings. On our third cruise, we actually ended up giving ours up the night before. Usually someone else is waiting for one to open, so it worked out fine. So yes, they go quickly, but cancellations do happen and it’s worth checking back.

How Access to the Cabanas Works

One thing people also seem to wonder about is how access to the cabanas works once you actually book one. Disney gives you wristbands for your cabana party, and those are usually delivered to your stateroom the day before your island stop in an envelope.

As long as everyone is wearing their wristband, you don’t all have to arrive or stay at the cabana together the entire day.So if part of your group wants to go explore the island or do activities while others stay back and relax, that’s completely fine.

Getting to the Cabanas

The biggest issue for us wasn’t actually the cabana itself. It was getting there. The family cabanas are located farther away from the main activities on the island, which can be a good thing if you want quiet and relaxation, but not so great if you have mobility issues or don’t want to walk long distances.

Disney does offer golf cart transportation if you or someone in your party is unable to walk the distance, but the process took a lot longer than expected. You have to contact Guest Services ahead of time to let them know you need assistance. On the ship, there’s a designated meeting spot where you wait in line, check in, and then wait again to be called, it’s first come, first served.

Some people forgot their Key to the World cards and had to go back, there seemed to be confusion at times about where to wait, and we also ended up waiting for additional drivers and passengers before leaving. You’re allowed to bring one additional guest with you, but since I also had a minor with me, all three of us were able to ride together.

By the time everything was said and done, it honestly took a while. If you’re physically able to walk comfortably, it’s faster to just walk. That said, I do appreciate that Disney at least offers transportation assistance for guests who need it. Once you get off that golf cart, you can either walk to the cabanas or there is another golf cart that can take you over.

There were a handful of us wondering where to go because there as no signage and the couple cast members I asked didn’t know. I ended up finding out and letting some of the other guests know as well. Another golf cart came and picked us up to drive us to the cabana. You just walk to the right once you get over the pier and there are some benches near a gate.

What the Cabana Was Actually Like

We stayed in Cabana #9, which ended up being a really good location. It was right across from the restrooms and close to the private food area for the cabanas, but not so close that it felt busy or loud. The setup itself was very relaxing and low key. It was also close to the lifeguard station.

The cabana is open air and came with:

padded loungers
additional beach chairs
a couch
table and chairs
an outdoor shower
a changing area with a privacy curtain
sunscreen
fridge with sodas and water
fruit and snacks
sand toys for kids

The beach chairs were originally set farther back, but I ended up moving them closer to the water. We also had a really nice view of the ship from our cabana, which I loved. I do wish there was a hammock.

One thing I thought was cool was the iPad-style control device inside the cabana. You could:

order drinks
request more snacks
adjust the music
call for transportation back to the ship

The staff was also great throughout the day. At one point they even helped me carry food trays back to the cabana, which I really appreciated.

What Could Have Been Better

This is where I understood some of the mixed reviews. The family cabanas cost over $1,000, so I do think some people expect a little more to be included for that price. The snacks and beverages were fine, but I understand why some people felt there should’ve been better options or more included drinks.

Another thing some people may not realize is that the cabanas are farther away from most of the island activities. If you plan on constantly moving around, doing activities, or checking out everything happening on the island, the location may actually feel inconvenient. You have to take a tram ride back and forth if you want to enjoy both the cabana and activites going on, on the island. Honestly for the price you are paying you almost don’t want to leave the cabana.

There were also no characters coming down to the beach area for photos while we were there, which surprised me a little. I do know people have spotted them, but we didn’t see any that day.

Was It Worth It?

Honestly, I think whether it’s worth it depends on what kind of beach day you want. For us, it was very peaceful, relaxing, and comfortable. Having shade, seating, privacy, snacks nearby, and a quieter area definitely made the day feel easier. It also allowed those with mobility issues to enjoy some time without worrying about walking around all day in the heat.

At the same time, I don’t think not having a cabana ruins the experience at all. The beaches at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point are still beautiful without one, and you can absolutely have a great day without spending the extra money.

To me, it felt more like paying for comfort and convenience than paying for extra activities. Would I do it again? Probably, especially with family or a group. But I can also completely understand why some people walk away feeling mixed about the price.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed having the cabana experience, especially because it gave us a quieter place to relax throughout the day. The staff was wonderful, the setup was comfortable, and it was nice knowing everyone in my party could enjoy the day on the island. It was also nice to know I didn’t need to bring sand toys with me when packing.

So if you’re considering booking one, I’d say go into it knowing exactly what you’re paying for: comfort, shade, a privatei-sh beach feeling, and convenience if you aren’t exploring the island and doing activies.

And if you can snag one without stressing yourself out too much in the process, even better.
