One Day in Charleston, South Carolina

I have been wanting to visit Charleston, South Carolina for a while. The charming photos and of course the southern food was a selling point. Another was that it is on so many lists as the must visit city. So when I finally had the opportunity to visit, I jumped on it. While only being there one day, I can say I look forward to going back.

I did a girl trips to Charleston with my mom, sister, and niece. Once we arrived we got a Lyft to grab some food at Hominy Grill. They serve breakfast and lunch. The staff is extremely friendly and the atmosphere is really nice. You have the choice of sitting inside or out.

We gave the waitress the easiest order ever. Everyone wanted shrimp and grits with a sweet tea. It was a must try since this low country dish is a staple in Charleston. We also ended up ordering biscuits that came with homemade jam and it was so delicious. The shrimp and grits had a little kick to them.

We then took another Lyft down to the French Quarter and walked around part of the market. They had teas, hot sauces, jewelry, and so much more being sold there. Although I wanted to take a walking tour I was out numbered and ended up on a carriage ride tour instead with Charleston Carriage Works.

There are only a handful of carriage ride tours as they only allow around 20 something carriages to be out giving tours at a time. There is also a lottery system that tells the guides which route they can take. So you may or may not see things you wanted to see. Also there is a chance you take another carriage tour and see something completely different or the same exact thing. It is the luck of the draw.

Personally I didn’t like this and would have preferred the walking tour because I would have seen more with no stipulations. Nonetheless the carriage tour was nice and something to consider. They do make sure to let you know how they take care of the horses and such. We got back story on the houses, war, slaves, ghosts, and fires.

After the carriage ride we walked around a bit visiting some candy shops before heading over to Rainbow Row. Rainbow Row has an array of colorful Georgian styled houses. They are pretty nice and picturesque. There are 13 of them and each has their own bit of history. We also spotted the oldest liquor store in the country across the street from there. At least that is what we were told.

We walked further down towards The Battery, which is a defensive seawall and promenade landmark. This area is a great place to walk and stare out at the water. It is also known for their antebellum homes. These homes also have their own bits of history. They are huge and I am sure cost in the millions.

Next up, some lunch. We headed over to Jestine’s Kitchen because there were many online recommendations for it. Apparently there is usually a long line to get in, but we didn’t have that issue. We walked right in and were seated.

There is plenty to choose from on the menu and the prices are reasonable. We also got difference dishes this time. The appetizer we chose was friend green tomatoes. I hate tomatoes, but will eat fried green ones. They were good.

Out of all the food ordered the winners were the fried shrimp, fried green tomatoes, and fried okra. Everything else was not the best. With all the recommendations and Southern Living and the O Magazines on the wall giving praise, we weren’t impressed. Maybe it was the cook for that day, not sure.

We had a great time in Charleston and I would love to go back. There is so much more to see and experience. The weather for February was nice and warm, in the 70s. The ride share there has some colorful drivers. We had one good driver out of all the ones we took. The rest didn’t get the highest scores.
