Eating good at Giordano’s in Chicago, IL
Deep dish pizza is synonymous with Chicago. Being from New York there has always been a pizza rivalry between the two. So of course being in Chicago I had to try out one of the many infamous places to get great deep dish pizza. I had a ton of recommendations and would have loved to try them all, but the one I did get to try was Giordano’s.
We were taken to the Giordano’s on North Rush St. It was late and we were very hungry after the sunset cruise. Although it was late and a little over an hour away from closing time I was told there would be a 20 minute wait to be seated. I was handed a menu and told we could sit near the bar to wait.
I saw more and more people coming in. I already knew I wanted to order the deep dish pizza. I went back to ask the hostess which one in particular were they famous for. What she didn’t tell me until I went back to ask how much longer, was that I should order the pizza on the pre-order line. With the pre-order line they begin to make your pizza while you wait, because they say it takes about 45 minutes to make the pizza.
I was a tad annoyed, but got on the pre-order line that was now pretty long. The moment I went to order I was told I couldn’t place the order because my table was ready and to place it with my waiter. As we walked over to the table I saw how many people were sitting around. The waiter took forever to come and I thought to myself ‘wow I could have ordered already.’
When he finally did come he let us know it would in fact take 45 minutes to an hour to make the pizza. Now being hungry and being a true New Yorker, where we wanted it to appear yesterday, this was a blow. At this point we were exhausted from running around Chicago all day and waiting for pizza sounded terrible. I looked around and saw a ton of people sitting around bored waiting for their food.
Some people ordered appetizers which seemed to take time to come as well. Once done they continued to sit around waiting for their pizza. My waiter disappeared and never came back with anything I asked for. When I did catch him walking around asking him how much longer he really didn’t want to tell us. We were becoming hangry.
Finally about an hour or so later the waiter appeared with a pizza. He cut a slice and put it on the plate. Now as New Yorkers we typically eat our pizza folded, but with the deep dish a knife and fork was used. It was extremely cheesy and tasted great. I was happy that the long wait and sub par service amounted to great tasting pizza.
We asked another waiter for a box to take the rest of the pizza to go. I ended up leaving Chicago with the leftovers and re-heating it back up. They put it in a very sturdy box. The pizza still tasted as amazing as when I first tasted it.
Giordano’s deep dish pizza was really good. I would go back seeing as I learned that I can pre-order since that wasn’t explained from the jump. I would also arrive before I became really hungry because it seemed all the food took a long time to be served. I may try another location if I was to go back, to potentially receive better service.
Have you ever been to Giordano’s? What was your experience like?

I actually just had the deep dish from Giorganos 3 days ago! It was delicious! I’ll have to go back soon! We called it in in advance though so didn’t have to wait forever.

It is very delicious. I went as a spur of the moment recommendation. So there was no time to call ahead.

I’ve never been but I’ve heard good things about it including your post. It looks so good. If I travel to Chicago one day I’ll have to get some, I love pizza.
Holly Dayz
I love pizza too! It is really good so I certainly recommend you try it.

Yummy! I love pizza!!! Sorry that your dining experience wasn’t the best though. Glad the good pizza made up for it!
Holly Dayz
Yes, the pizza was really good and I love pizza!

Omg Holly! I’m so hungry and your post is not helping! I’ve only been to Chicago once and that was to fly out of O’Hare airport. If I’m ever there again, I definitely want to try this place….sans the waiting. I have zero patience…..lol!!
Holly Dayz
Haha sorry! Hopefully you head to Chicago again soon. I had no patience either, especially when your starving.

As a Chicago native, I was thinking right from the beginning of your story that I hope they told you to order your Pizza now. Sorry it wasn’t a great experience. Giordanos is my favorite, and you went to the original and best of the chain. I haven’t lived in Chicago since the early 80s, yet when ever I visit, my first stop is Giordanos for a stuffed spinach and mushroom pizza. Your photo made me a bit jealous 🙂

I feel had they let me know that or there was a sign, the experience would have been much better. The waiter still wasn’t great. The pizza was delicious though. I hope you get some soon then!

This is very good to know since I will be in Chicago next week! My fiancé raves about their stuffed pizzas but waiting over an hour is ridiculous. I’ll definitely pre order!
Holly Dayz
Yes pre-order! Everything will go smoother that way! The pizza is delicious so your fiance knows what he is talking about.

OMG I am dying to get to Chicago just to finally experience their deep dish pizza!!! Seriously, I am drooling just thinking about it, so will be bookmarking this.

You have to get there soon. Seems like a really hot place to go, I am seeing Chicago everywhere now that I have come and gone. Let me know when you do go.

My family visited Chicago briefly when I was a kid, but we didn’t have any pizza. I’ve been seeing dealt lately so I really need to find myself there.
Holly Dayz
When I was a kid and visited I don’t recall the pizza or any of the things I visited. It is a bit different when your visiting and living the local life in the suburbs.

Holly Dayz
I love pizza too! Certainly a must try!

Gloraaaaay! I love pizza so much! I could seriously eat it every day. This looks and sounds delicious and while I have no real desire to go to Chicago, I might just have to make a trip 🙂
Holly Dayz
I love pizza too! Someone once told me I could sweat dough. I have heard of people solely going to Chicago for some deep dish.

I’ve never been to Chicago but I do enjoy deep dish pizza. But I will always be the #1 fan of NY style pizza. Always. I can’t wait to visit Chicago to taste the real thing.
Holly Dayz
I am a fan of NY style too! Always and forever, but this was very tasty.

As a native Chicagoan, I would have told you to go elsewhere for deep dish pizza. Giordano’s isn’t even close to the best. Honestly, I’m not surprised by your overall unpleasant experience.
Holly Dayz
Where would you suggest? I wanted to try Lou Malnati’s to compare, but didn’t get the opportunity.
