Minci Stenson

My name is Minci Sekou Stenson and I am currently a Travel Nurse with a specialty in OB. I started to take travel more seriously once my father passed away and one of the things he told me was to travel the world and make a difference. So I quit my job and decided to do travel nursing and during the five years I’ve had pleasure of traveling to Alaska, New York, California, Texas, and Guam to gain more patient experience and cultural awareness in my profession.

I don’t just travel for work I also love to travel for fun and for the different cultural experience. So far I have visited 49 countries and 6 Continents both solo and group travels. Some of my favorite and life changing places that I have visited has been Africa, Greece, Thailand, Dubai, Japan and Australia. When I visit different countries I make it a priority to experience the culture and stay with the locals and learn their history and how they live.

Travel has been such a blessing for me and one of my goals is to be able to educate people into traveling on a budget and traveling in a way that they could gain the most educational and life changing experience. Traveling has helped me become more culturally aware which has helped me become a more efficient nurse and individual. I encourage people to have an open mind and to step out of their comfort zones and see the world for what amazing gifts it gives us.

I have a cousin who used to be a travel nurse. After she had her son she opted for something more stable and closer to family. This is cool though.
Holly Dayz
That is completely understandable. That seems like a good job prior to children.
Nadalie Bardo
Wow, what an incredible way to honor your father! Who knew you would travel as a nurse. Enjoy the adventure!
Holly Dayz
I agree. I never thought of being a travel nurse.

Being a travel nurse seems like a great way to see the world. You get to integrate into a needed position and still have time to explore.
Holly Dayz
Yes, it seems like an amazing way. She also makes great money and gets to make her own time off.

You sure know some interesting people, Holly. Love traveling nurses especially when they go as far and as often as Minci. Wonderful that she’s able to honor her family too. Great post.
Holly Dayz
Thank you! She has seen a lot.

I have met a few traveling nurses in my time and they are always the most generous down to earth people I know. Salt of the earth with lots of travel stories! Love this interview!
Holly Dayz

I was a traveling Respiratory Therapist for a couple of years, it wasn’t as groovy as I had hoped it would be but then I’m sure it would have been better had I been a nurse. My most exotic gig was in Singapore, but would have loved to have made it to Guam like Minci. I’ve kicked myself a million times for not getting a nursing degree. So many options!
Holly Dayz
Oh wow that is awesome. I am sorry to hear it wasn’t as groovy. Singapore does sound very cool though.

It’s great to have a career that allows you to travel and explore the world. I recently met a traveling nurse and who loves her flexible schedule and the opportunity to work in different countries. Good for you for following your dreams as you expand your horizons and celebrate your father. Keep living your dream!
Holly Dayz
It is amazing that not only do they get to help people, but they get to have a schedule that allows them to do their own traveling on their own time.
Linda (LD Holland)
So great to have a profession that lets Minci make a difference when she travels. I am sure that the experiences have really broadened her perspective with 49 countries under her belt. A great way to learn more about local cultures.
Adonis Villanueva
I’m always amazed at all the creative ways travelers find ways to make money! Traveling nurse sounds like it’s tough to do! Minci sounds like she’s found her calling and I gotta say, congrats!
Tami Wilcox
I’m wondering just what does a travel nurse do? Is she assigned to travel with someone needing medical help while they travel? Or is she going to areas that are short on medical help and staying for awhile? All in all, it seems like a very fascinating and fulfilling line of work.
Holly Dayz
Take a listen tot he podcast episode. She answers all of those questions and more.
